In the United States President Barack Obama declared by proclamation that October is now Breast Cancer Month. He announced that his administration would offer resolute support in the fight against breast cancer. The president went on to ask that leaders of Government agencies such as National Institute of Health, the Department of Defence and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to invest more than $1 billion US funds to research this year. This funding he said would strengthen awareness and knowledge of Breast Cancer development that hopefully will lead to improvements in early detection and treatments of patients affected by breast cancer. Other countries such as Canada and the UK have also stepped up to the bat increasing spending on research and development of cancer and the public over the past few years have been doing an all out job of fundraising for this not just worthwhile, but necessary cause.

Proclamations and speeches such as President Obama’s and other world leaders goes a long way in encouraging the public, Federal agencies, private corporations and employers, non-profit fund raising groups, Pink Merchandise manufacturers and sellers, and other interested groups or individuals to get on the wagon and support the fight against cancer. This one month targeted window of time offers and encourages individuals and groups to take part in or support through donations of time, money or advertising the fundraising efforts and push them into a full swing. Thousands of employees in their workplace have taken on the challenge of organizing events and fundraisers to do their part in this gigantic effort. Pink Merchandise has saturated the market with pink ribbons, pins, hats, shirts, lunch bags etc. that are sold and proudly worn by friends, family and fellow employees as they unite on a common front to help fundraise for the cause.

Some may question the validity of attaching such a high priority on Breast Cancer prevention, research and treatment in the current climate of tight budgets and unparalleled economics slowdowns. What is the driving motivation behind this strong support by the current Obama administration? The main reason sadly is statistics. In the USA alone statistics from research have shown that 190,000 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer and over 40,000 of these women (and men) will lose the battle against cancer. Breast cancer has become the second leading cause of death among women. This means now more than ever every man, woman and child must do their best to contribute and support to this worthwhile cause.
