Inflamatory breast cancer is a type of cancer that causes inflammation of the breast tissue by a clogging of the lymph vessels under the skin. Scientists have yet to discover a definite cause of this blocking though.
Only six percent of all breast cancer cases reported annually in the United States are inflammatory but the alarming thing is that of that six percent 25% is fatal and most women will become terminally ill within 5 years of contacting this type of breast cancer.
Researchers in the medical community and other scientific researchers have taken an interest though in chemicals such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers which are found in items such as blue jeans and no stick frying pans and other dominant chemicals found in the home. These parabens that are used to prevent bacteria growth in cosmetics, deodorants, shampoos etc. have also proven to cause inflammation in humans. The question the researchers ask is whether women who are diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer may have had a build up of these chemicals over an extended period causing the blockage of lymph vessels.
Parabens have been linked in past studies to cancer and reproductive health issues and in one research project it was found that in 19 out of 20 blood samples taken from women trace amounts of parabens were found.
To get a better idea of how common chemical toxins and parabens found in the home the television show Dateline (NBC) asked the question: “Do those living a green lifestyle have less chemical toxins in their blood than those who live a normal lifestyle?” Using two families one who lived an almost completely green lifestyle including a “green” environmentally friendly home they built themselves and the other a family who lived in a typical family setting using normal products.
Blood tests and analysis was conducted by Axys Analytical Labs in Canada. When the results of the blood samples came back it was found that that the green family had far less toxin chemical build up in their blood streams.
The results found such chemicals in the non-green family as Phthalates which are found in plastics and are linked to asthma and hormonal differences in breast feeding males, triclosans which are toxic to wildlife and also known to form carcinogens when combined with such things as chlorinated tap water, bisphenol A/BPA found in baby bottles, water coolers and metal food containers and linked to diabetes and breast cancer. Incidentally bisphenol A/BPA is considered by scientists to be one of the top medical concerns for public safety.
So although more testing and research is definitely needed in all areas of indoor air quality and products used in our homes there is some indication that there may well be a link to inflammatory breast cancer. Research is still in the early stages of studying and testing chemical exposures in our homes and work environments and although there is often little we can do about our work places there are precautions we can take at home. Consumers are advised to check your home on a regular basis for possible chemical toxins. Read all labels of products that may have harmful chemical agents before purchasing and bringing home. If you have doubts whether after reading a label for a particular product whether it may be harmful to your children leave it and find an alternative.People should also be aware that if you are diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer you can have a blood analysis test done that will give you a breakdown of any inflammation causing chemicals in your body. Knowing which chemicals these are you can identify the source and eliminate the products from your home
