October for more than 25 years has been set aside and designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It has been a time when every effort is done to promote information about this terrible disease. The desire is to try and make sure every woman is informed about the risks of the disease and its symptoms and signs. This will incorporate special events such as races to run and even fund raisers. There will be special sales in stores and any other ways that can be used to help with the cause. The image associated with breast cancer support, the pink ribbons will be seen everywhere. It is all part of the diversity of exposure and promotion done to heighten thoughts about breast cancer. The whole effort is in part an attempt to give as much focus on possible to the need for early detection and recovery. And hopefully to help expand what people know to build more support for cancer survivors and victims as well for the continued need for research. This all can be put in perspective for the woman in terms of how it personally impacts her as a possible cancer sufferer.

There are specific goals that they hope to be gain by this awareness month in that regard for women. The first is to encourage women over the age of 40 to have regular screening mammograms as well as performing monthly self-examinations. This can’t be encouraged enough. It is the first and easiest step in the process of early detection. And with breast cancer there is no amount of early time that is enough when trying to keep it from becoming life threatening. Every attempt is made to help woman be encouraged to embrace this as a very necessary and beneficial practice. The doctor can provide any help necessary to make this process something that is easy to make as apart of any woman’s life. Along with that process women are also encouraged to see their doctor for more thorough examinations. This will allow the doctor to explain about the importance of other tests as well as the risks of breast cancer. Such test might include a MRI. Today some 2 to 3 million women in the United States are breast cancer survivors. And they have learned the ways to successfully deal with coping with recovery.

Thus there are things that become part of what one needs to adjust in life as a cancer survivor. The first is to accept the emotional changes that come with cancer. Life and body are different and that can take time to accept that reality. It will mean all the range of feelings that come with traumas of a disease. This would also involve noticing and adjusting to how the body has been changed.

Another aspect is to accept all the support that comes from family and friends. It might not always come as we want, but it is something to appreciate in the ways it does come. They can be a very helpful support system that can ease the problems of adjusting to all the changes. Plus use that support as encouragement to take care of oneself. Be sure to follow the doctor’s advice and get involved with things like exercise programs and other changes that are needed.

Also along this line is to refocus the priorities of life. Look for the positive options that will give one goals and hope again. It can be so helpful is the transition to things that will mean promise for the future. Then look for ways to help turn the situations into benefits. That means seeing what can help in the midst of what otherwise seem a problem. And accept the good you have already achieved. Take time to truly have pride in what you accomplished.
