October has been officially recognized for the past 25 years as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every October thousands participate in walks, races, fundraisers, lottery draws and numerous other events to not only raise much needed funds but to also raise and educate peoples awareness of this killer on the lose.
The symbol for Breast Cancer that is most known throughout the world is the pink ribbon and throughout the month of October the ribbon and the color pink will be the predominate color everywhere. Everything from jewelry to toasters will sport the pink ribbon and will be seen in almost every aspect of our day to day life.
One of the most important messages that will be sent out hopefully is that if you are a woman over 40you should be having regular screening mammograms and performing monthly breast self examinations. You should also be seeing your physician for an annual breast exam and a discussion with him on your individual risk factors and whether he feels that further tests such as an MRI should be taken. Although between 2 and 3 million women living today are breast cancer survivors there is still a ways to go after your cancer has been beaten and you want to move on with your life. The following may help you on this path to emotional recovery.
Express your feelings and emotions about having survived your cancer. Anyone who has had breast cancer and survived has also no doubt had various feelings such as anger, fear, anxiety, depression and stress to deal with. Speak openly with friends and loved ones to acknowledge these emotions. This will be the first step in beginning to cope with them
Recognize and try and accept the changes that have taken place in your body. Grieve if required the fact that you feel your body has betrayed you. Address the symptoms your body may be feeling from the after affects of surviving cancer such as: fatigue, weight loss, hair loss and menopausal changes.
Welcome and enjoy the love, support and kindness offered to you by others. To have a caring network of family, friends and even co-workers gives you a sense of not being in this alone. Let someone drive you if you need a drive, or someone wants to run an errand for you, or even cook a meal and drop it off at your house to save you cooking. Join a cancer survivors support group to ask questions and find out how to deal with things that only someone who has been there can understand.
Take the time and make the effort to pamper yourself
