Breast cancer strikes fear in millions of women. Early detection of breast cancer gives women the best chance for recovery, and survival. Its important that women know the warning signs and symptoms of breast cancer. Self breast examination is one way of recognizing early symptoms and signs of breast cancer. Failure to see the early signs of breast cancer may result in more drastic treatment and less of a chance to recover

In the very early stages of breast cancer, there are virtually no signs or symptoms. The cancer tumor is growing under the skin, and shows no physical symptoms, and there are no signs that you have cancer. As the tumor grows, certain symptoms may develop. Some women show many symptoms, where others may show only a few signs.

One of the early signs of breast cancer is a lump in the breast. The lump is often painless and is a very common symptom in breast cancer cases. Some women have lumpy breasts during their menstrual cycle but soften afterwards. A cancer lump will not disappear. It remains after the menstrual cycle. The lump may be painless or may have a prickly sensation. The lump may be directly on the breast, or under the arm, by the arm pit. Sometimes a woman will have some swelling associated with the lump and other times just one or the other.

Although the lumps in early stages are usually painless, some women experience pain or tenderness in the breast or a part of the breast. In some cases the pain is mild but more painful to the touch.

Some women notice a physical change in the appearance of her breast. Some notice a difference in size, the before, or a difference in the appearance of the skin. The breast may have different texture, or contour, it may take a different shape, or the skin may have a difference in color in some areas. In cases of advanced breast cancer there are more physical signs. Reddish color or marbled texture, of the breast tissue or pitted areas of the breast are also signs of advanced cancer.

Many breast cancer symptoms have to do with the nipple itself. Paying close attention to the nipples can be helpful in detecting possible breast cancer. A change in the appearance of the nipple or areola, a dimpled or indrawn look. Itchy or burning in and around the nipple may also be a symptom of an isolated form of cancer called Paget’s disease. Sometimes a nipple will have a discharge that’s either clear, or bloody. This is a rare possible symptom of cancer., but most of the time. its a benign treatable illness.

Any form of swelling in the breast or arm pit area is another symptom associated with breast cancer. Any persistent pain, or abnormal lumps should be addressed. If one of your breasts, looks or feels abnormal, you just get it diagnosed. More case then not, the symptoms are related to something other then cancer. However early detection is the key to fighting cancer it happens to be the case.

Its important to know that not all breast cancer symptoms and signs are painful. Even a lump may not hurt. Any abnormalities of the breast should be noted, and examined. Self breast exams should be both by inspect your breasts, as well as a physically examining yourself. Waiting for symptoms to get worse, or waiting for the symptoms to become importable is the wrong way to approach this disease. Early diagnosis and treatment may help save your life. The chance of survival with advanced breast cancer is very low, compared to early treatment, which is much more positive.
