Breast cancer survivors and their medical physicians are showing signs of concern for the rising account of osteoporosis among cancer survivors. One of the thoughts behind this is from the variety of cancer drugs that the medical community is feeding to the breast cancer women to eradicate the cancer. Osteoporosis is a growing concern, as this is becoming a direct side effect.

Breast cancer drugs are many, but a specific one, aromatase inhibitor found to decrease the bone mineral density and increase the fracture risks in the many of the breast cancer patients. This was an astounding find for the medical community to come across. Women who have gone through having their ovaries removed and even tried hormonal therapy believing it will work and help them to be breast cancer free.

Hormonal therapy works differently than many other therapies. Hormonal therapy works against the hormone receptor in breast cancer. The hormonal therapeutic medications are treatments to fight breast cancer in a couple of ways.

Lowering the amount of the estrogen within the woman’s body

Blocking the estrogen levels in the breast cancer cells

Removal of the ovaries is the most important treatment. Most of the estrogen in a woman’s body is through the ovaries. Women receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer may want to consider having their ovaries removed before beginning any further treatments. Another possibility for the woman to consider is to have her fallopian tubes surgically removed.

Removal of the ovaries in a sense works for and against the breast cancer stricken woman. In certain breast cancer women, there are a few drugs to help counter the turmoil the body is going through. Now it is time to learn the rebuilding of the bones and the woman’s body for the woman to continue to gain strength and live out a normal, happy, and very healthy life. Some of these new medications are the following:

Osteoporosis drugs such as bisphosphonates

Osteoporosis drugs such as alendronate sodium

Osteoporosis drugs such as Fosamax

Osteoporosis drugs such as ibandronate sodium

Osteoporosis drugs such as Boniva

Studies found that the breast cancer medication and treatments currently in use to treat breast cancer are not alone. There are other drugs, and the lack of vitamin D is also contributory factors in the pending ill health after women survive breast cancer. Another unknown is the frequency of vitamins and the strength of vitamins. There is currently a study to find out exactly what role vitamins play in the regaining of strength in the breast cancer patients. If this are found to be accurate this would then apply to other cancer patients.

Studies of aromatase inhibitors seem to decrease the body’s production of estrogen in the woman receiving treatment for breast cancer. Strangely enough it found that estrogen feeds cancer and at the same time aromatase inhibitors protect against osteoporosis. What the medical community found is that the aromatase inhibitors letrozole and exemestane in this study along with the breast cancer treatments.

Studies also found that the majority of women under treatment for breast cancer experienced different levels of bone loss due to the lack of vitamin D and from the excessive calcium excretion in the urine found in a number of breast cancer patients. This study was a real opener for the medical community as a whole.
