Scientists from two leading United States universities (University of California, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkley Laboratory) recently did research studies on toxic pollutants found in many household cleaners and related health issues. The goal was to find out what kind and how serious these chemicals posed health risks or could be a cause of breast cancer in women if used over extended periods. Scientists while exploring causes of breast cancer in relation to poor indoor air quality found a link between some of the more toxic cleaning materials and on a set of increasing diseases that were found to be associated with toxic chemical poisoning.
According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers their reports indicate that the largest occurrences of poisoning in most homes are due to such products as toilet bowl cleaners, bleach, detergents and air fresheners.
180,000 women will develop breast cancer in the United Sates each year or 1 in 8 women. This may be a staggering statistic but what is even more frightening is 44,000 of these cases will be fatal.
Noted author and researcher Doctor Sherry Rogers is quoted as saying: “There is an avalanche of toxic chemicals overpowering our bodies daily and we are not able to eliminate them fast enough”. Dr. Rogers went on to say that although our bodies have developed immune systems over thousand of years to protect us from bacteria and viruses the chemicals that are in the products we use daily are only 80 to 100 years old. Our bodies have not had time to find or adapt to ways to fight off the toxins found in these new products. So as incidents of diseases such as asthma and cancer increases we fail to make the connection between our indoor environment and the illnesses.
Volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) were found in ordinary household cleaners according to studies done by Washington Toxins Coalition. They found that these cleaners contained both carcinogens that cancer cells tend to feed on as well as neurotoxins that once airborne can be a cause of breast cancers. They also found that high levels of Toluene put pregnant women’s unborn children at greater risk of having neurological disorders or possible growth and development problems.
Suffolk County in New York State after taking seriously the advice of both university and government studies of the causes of breast cancer and other chemical related diseases like asthma have made a step forward in the fight against chemical and toxin poisoning. A new law has been passed that will require that the county not purchase and cleaning or landscaping products that contain any toxic chemicals.
Miami’s Institute of Health Allen McMichaels (PhD) was recently quoted as saying: “We were taught that when you open a washing machine and smell bleach then it means your clothes are clean.” He then added: “But who told you it was a clean smell? Your mom right? He then asked: “Where did she get her PhD?” He concluded by saying: I have a PhD in Chemical Biology and I am telling you the smell of chlorine can cause asthma, and the smell of chlorine can cause cancer, and I’m telling you the smell of chlorine is fowl to scientists”.
Just as a note of interest since the end of World War Two at least 85,000 new chemicals have been introduced into products that are used regualarly on the American market but only 4 of those in the last two years have been tested by the EPA
