Men in general do not experience the malady of breast cancer, but there is a small percentage of men who are receiving the diagnosis. This would follow suit with a genetic disorder. When the women in a particular family find they are at risk for breast cancer or receive a diagnosis of breast cancer there is a risk the direct male descendents will also receive a diagnosis of breast cancer.
Uncontrolled growth of breast tissue cells is one of the determinants of breast cancer in men. Under normal conditions the male hormone testosterone helps to suppress the growth of breast tissue in males. Initially the male species and the female species have breasts dictated under the same conditions, but it is the release of specific hormones that make the difference.
Statistically less than one percent of men eventually develop breast cancer, which some would say is staggering. On an annual basis less than five hundred men die from breast cancer. Women on the other hand have surpassed forty thousand deaths annually and this is a catastrophic figure. Men seem to develop breast cancer between the ages of sixty and seventy, though known cases of younger men developing breast cancer do exist.
Breast cancer today is so much more survivable than it ever was. Perhaps one day this horrible, debilitating malady will finally be put to rest and on a list of other past diseases that are gone because of medical science. However, in the meantime, you must persevere and continue the march forward into all of the tomorrows. Understand that this is no easy feat to accomplish, but all survivors, even the men everywhere must stand tall together and continue to bring attention to this taker of lives. Remembering too that although women are the ones to predominantly be afflicted, there is a population of men who receive a diagnosis of breast cancer too.
